What is Hosted?

Professor Technology wants to talk about the concept of Hosted Services. This a buzz phrase in today’s business world. We are talking about all the savings that come along with virtualizing recently and now we want to take that a step further into off-site hosting. The initial virtualization process we have been talking about is on-premise server virtualization and all its benefits. Those benefits are very real but we can even become more effective by moving farther up the ladder of complete virtualization. We can move our critical data and apps to a third party colo or datacenter. It will no longer be within our company walls and will add to the cost savings and massive reduction in lost man hours.

Once we decide on hosted then we have to decide on private cloud or public cloud. The main difference between them is that in the private cloud all your information is behind your own firewall. In essence, a little more protected and safe, however this will come at a higher cost as your information now requires dedicated infrastructure. With the public cloud you are sharing a pool of resources while remaining secure and efficient. These are major decisions that need to be made in the very near future if you aren’t discussing them already. Virtualization and Hosted Services are the way of the future, be sure you aren’t left behind with physical costs too high to compete in today’s down economy.
