For today’s research I came across an article on ZDnet(Link to article). The writer is interviews the VP of Technology & CTO of Southwest Airlines. Questions are asked on how Virtualization has helped them to get to where they are today. I personally fly southwest a lot and I love all of their great web sales and features that are at my fingertips. After reading this article I’ve learned all the great features are run behind the scenes by virtualization and what a fantastic fact that is. Virtualization has allowed Southwest to spin up vm’s in seconds when huge sales are going on and customers need the information fast. The writer also asks where does Southwest see themselves with going 100% virtualized which is an interesting thought. At this time they would love to but certain areas of technology are not allowing Southwest to go 100%. At this time those technology vendors make it so their product cannot be virtualized and literally stops Southwest in their shoes and being better. As the years turn those vendors will have to waive the white flag and give in, virtualization isn’t going anywhere. Another great note was the CTO’s take on virtual desktops. He feels it is a great tool for being mobile and tighten security on what is being implemented on desktops by end users. Good point Mr. CTO. This article was a great read and gave a me as an end user (not an implementer) a different perspective on how virtualization affects me and my one of my favorite companies.

Hello Class,

Professor Desktop has decided to give a new approach and let the students speak about what they are learning. Today I came across an article about Bring Your Own Desktop aka BYOD (article link). The writer comments on how companies can protect themselves from this theory if it is installed within the business. Below are the writer’s 5 ways to protect a company from employee devices:

1. Remote wipe & lock
2. Geo-location tracking
3. Network authentication, authorization, accounting
4. Secure remote support
5. Acceptable use policy

What I think has been failed to be brought up is the bright side of BYOD. Companies are looking to cut costs. Instead of buying new computers or refreshing them most companies are giving employees a rebate. They give something like $500 towards any device the employee would like to purchase and then slap on a virtual desktop (which the company has full control over). The device then holds the employees dual life (personal or business) and can work more efficiently whether it’s at the workplace or on the beach in Maui. Two positives for the price of one. What do you think are some pros and cons on BYOD?

The University of Virtuon would like to talk about a lesson on never giving up. This year’s St Louis Cardinals are an amazing story across all walks of life. They were written off in August as no chance to make the playoffs, after all they were 10.5 games out with a month to go in the baseball season! They put together an amazing run and made it into the playoffs on the final day of the season. Then proceeded to beat the best team in baseball on the road to advance. Then beat the team with the best home record in baseball at their place to move into the World Series. Talk about improbable!!

The lesson here is this: If you believe in yourself, your team and coworkers, your management and your goal – you can achieve anything! Just ask the World Series bound St Louis Cardinals about believing and winning when the media has written you off. It is no different in business and technology, sometimes the world seems to be against you and no one believes in you. Yet somehow you still find a way to prove the doubters wrong and come out on top in the end.

The Silver Linings shout, “Keep believing and the result may surprise even you!”

We would like to take some time to talk about what it takes to be on the top. There are many books written about the subject of psychology and how it spills over into the self-help genre. Then there is the more specific category of sports psychology which in essence it is the combining psychology with competitiveness. You may not be in sports but if you are in a company there sure seems to be a lot of competition. Maybe your company vs another company or maybe the members of your sales team having a competition to see who sells the most. Competition comes up a lot in the business environment and psychology is often never focused upon in a true business atmosphere. But what makes one salesperson great and another be let go after 90 days? Why is one manager a major difference maker and another just floundering to find their way?

These answers come down to psychology and are they the correct person for the job. A lot goes into the determining whether someone is qualified and much more appropriate would be – do they possess the skill set, both physically and mentally, to be a contribution to our company. This is a very in depth process and someone in HR or a talent evaluator must be skilled in what to look for and how determine the psychological “winners” from the “great background and I hope they fit ins.”

The Silver Linings cheerleaders yell, “Do they have the right temperament for the trade?”

Professor Desktop would like to spend some time talking about the highest of the virtualization steps which at this point is Hosted Virtual Desktops. This is pretty new to the world of virtualization and is ahead of the curve. Ahead of the curve is a great place to be but it takes time for the adopters to catch up. You never want to be too far ahead or might slip off the upslope. Timing and capital funding are two huge key factors to access where you are at in your niche marketplace. Understanding these two key components will assist you in making accurate decisions for investments.

Hosted Virtual Desktops will be commonplace someday although no one knows exactly when that will be. The world is heading in that direction currently and will continue to do so. Do a lot of research on this technology to see if it benefits your current environment or if waiting would be best. There is never a right time to move into the future and take risks – only know that with preparation and research you can reduce the variable in order to come as close to ensuring perfection as possible.

Professor Cloud would like to talk about networking and why it is vital to any business in any industry. As we have heard so many times – people buy from people they like and trust! With this fact being stated over and over, why is networking and marketing still so overlooked? The cloud is helping to make businesses more efficient and agile so this is a perfect subject to touch on in our business education setting. Networking is one of the major keys to business growth. It can sometimes be compared to cold-calling, the necessary evil in the business environment. No one likes to cold call but everyone loves the results of cold calling. There is a paradox here, which goes along with success, do what others aren’t willing to do and the pot of gold will be all yours.

We all want lasting relationships and friendships – do that we must be willing to put in the time and effort. Networking takes time so do not judge success on instant gratification. Like in the virtualization world, which has a 10 month ROI, networking may take time. Be sure to focus on the long term and if you believe in what you do or who you work for the time spent will be well worth it.

PC says, “Relationships take time – there are no microwavable networking events!”

Professor Virtualization is asking to talk about wants vs. needs in today’s class. This is a big issue when considering your move to a virtualized infrastructure. How far do you want to go at this point with virtualization? You can start with just on-prem servers or go all in with everything including hosted virtual desktops. It is important to do many business discoveries as to what, if any, virtualization should be put into place. Most likely, the virtualization process piggy backs some other project you have within your company such as: refreshing your computer hardware or migrating to Windows 7. Virtualization has an excellent ROI and a very quick time frame but it should be done in sync with some other project you have going on in order to justify the upfront capex.

Make sure you do plenty of analysis or access some of the excellent companies out there currently to assist you in this endeavor in order to properly assess your current environment and the best way to get where you want to go. Virtualization is all about agility and efficiency, make sure the path you take to get there is filled with efficient, good decision making.

Professor vPresence would like to share some thoughts on partnerships. The best type of partnership is one that benefits both parties, in this case both companies. Be sure to seek out healthy, mutually beneficial relationships. Networking is a big piece of finding the right partners. There are many events, both big and small, where you can find lasting partnership building. Make sure you take the time to attend as many local events as possible. Be sure to attend all major events and conventions as well. Talk to as many people as possible, some that you can help and others that can help you.

vPresence is our main partnership tool which mainly focuses on Hosted Virtual Desktops. We have added other markets like Hosted Servers and Hosted Storage. These are major buzz concepts these days so be sure you find the right company to partner with or become clients of. There are many hidden scenarios and questions when it comes to hosted services so be sure to find a company that you completely trust. Considering all relationship are built on trust!

Professor Technology wants to talk about the concept of Hosted Services. This a buzz phrase in today’s business world. We are talking about all the savings that come along with virtualizing recently and now we want to take that a step further into off-site hosting. The initial virtualization process we have been talking about is on-premise server virtualization and all its benefits. Those benefits are very real but we can even become more effective by moving farther up the ladder of complete virtualization. We can move our critical data and apps to a third party colo or datacenter. It will no longer be within our company walls and will add to the cost savings and massive reduction in lost man hours.

Once we decide on hosted then we have to decide on private cloud or public cloud. The main difference between them is that in the private cloud all your information is behind your own firewall. In essence, a little more protected and safe, however this will come at a higher cost as your information now requires dedicated infrastructure. With the public cloud you are sharing a pool of resources while remaining secure and efficient. These are major decisions that need to be made in the very near future if you aren’t discussing them already. Virtualization and Hosted Services are the way of the future, be sure you aren’t left behind with physical costs too high to compete in today’s down economy.

Professor Virtualization wants to take a look at the basics today. The first level of virtualization is on-premise server virtualization. This is step one in what has become a long journey to a fully virtualized infrastructure. By virtualizing the server, what you are doing is becoming much more efficient. You will save on cap ex, buying less physical servers, and man hours, IT Staff can now manage much more than in a physical environment, and you will be saving a lot on energy costs. This three headed benefits monster has pushed virtualization into a necessity rather than a high-price enterprise only luxury.

If you are still running a completely physical environment, now would be the time to look into some virtualization options. There are many strong companies out there and what has become very reasonably priced virtualization methods. You can start small and just do your servers. You can always add more virtualization as you go. It doesn’t have to be a huge upfront investment but even you do spend the money to virtualize, it will pay you back in spades moving into the future. It makes sense and it is the wave of the future so the sooner you jump on board the less steep the climb will be in the future to get virtualized.

ProV says, “Virtualization is the way to future-proof your business!”
